Saving lives is our mission
Santuario Animal del Desierto A.C. (SANAD) was founded and legally incorporated as a non-profit corporation in December of 2010. Its founding members are a group of animal advocates who teamed up on a mission to save the lives of homeless animals in the Baja California, Mexico region. The group started by rescuing animals and sharing their own homes with them while providing food and veterinary care until they were ready to be re-homed with responsible families. Due to the increasing number of animals in need, they decided to build a special place where they could receive a much greater number of rescues and save more lives. Today that place is SANAD, a no-kill animal sanctuary home to a great number of cats and dogs that have been abandoned, neglected, or abused. Our facility is run by a team of volunteers who organize rescues, provide veterinary care, work on animal rehabilitation, and coordinate the adoption process.
Through our partnerships with local pet supply chains, we hold weekly adoption events to find our residents a forever home with a loving family. Some of our sanctuary animals are permanent residents of our facilities and do not enter the adoption process because of medical conditions, advanced age, injuries, or behavior problems. For these special residents we offer special areas within our facility where they receive all the special medical and emotional support, they need to live their fullest life.
To protect our local wildlife, we have created a special area which is a haven to the desert tortoises. These reptiles are very important to us because they are native to this region and are a threatened species.
SANAD is also home to many farm animals who have arrived as rescues and made this place their home.
We continue to work with the community not only through animal rescue but by participating in local family events where we educate people of all ages about the importance of animal care, adoption, sterilization, and conservation of the wildlife species.
Our Sanctuary is a reality thanks to donations and continued support. We invite you to join us in our mission of changing and saving more lives.
